5G, short for the fifth generation, is the latest global wireless standard that improves upon the 4G network commonly used by most smartphones. Benefits of the 5G network include faster multi-Gbps speeds, lower latency, and improved stability compared to previous generation mobile networks. The network is also expected to enable new use cases such as augmented reality/virtual reality, AI, and high-speed telephony among others for consumers. Countries such as the US, South Korea, Europe, and China have already begun deploying 5G networks.
When is 5G launching in India?
The 5G services were launched in India on October 1st, 2023, at the India Mobile Congress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the 5G network at the opening of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023 on October 1st. Airtel and Jio were the first ones to be launched by PM Modi, and initially the 5G network will be available in certain cities. Airtel has launched its 5G services on October 1st, 2023 in 8 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi and Bangalore. Airtel states that the 5G network will be available in major cities by December 2023 and plans to cover every town and key local region with 5G by March 2024. Airtel’s 5G rollout plan includes coverage for 5000 towns across the country. Jio has announced that it will launch its 5G services in 4 cities by Diwali 2023. These cities are Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. During its Annual General Meeting, Reliance Jio announced its highly anticipated 5G services, stating that they will be available by Diwali 2023 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. Jio plans to expand to other cities and towns in the region and aims to cover the whole of India in 18 months by December 2023. Jio has already completed its 5G coverage in the top 1000 cities across the country.
5G Bands In India-List
5G radio signals in India are available in the 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands. Out of these, Jio acquired the coveted 700 MHz band, which is believed to offer better services along with the 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands. The telco spent Rs 88,078 crore for a total of 24,740 MHz of spectrum. Airtel, on the other hand, invested in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands. The telco paid 43,084 crores for a total of 19,876 MHz of the spectrum. Vi invested the least (Rs 18,799 crore) among all the telcos for the 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz bands, obtaining a total of 6,228 MHz of airwaves.
Jio has officially announced the launch of its 5G network in India. The telco will begin rolling out the network in the country starting from Diwali, which is in October this year. The Jio 5G will initially be available in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai before being introduced to other regions. Jio has stated that it will take a minimum of 18 months for the network to mature in the country. Also, the Jio 5G services will be based on a standalone (SA) 5G network, which offers faster connectivity speed and lower latency than the non-standalone (NSA) network. On January 14th, Jio’s True 5G network was expanded to 16 cities across the country, including Raipur, Durg and Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, Rourkela and Berhampur in Odisha, Bijapur, Udipi, Gulbarga, and Bellary in Karnataka, Amravati in Maharashtra, Eluru in Andhra Pradesh, and Kollam in Kerala. The company aims to make Jio True 5G available in every town and village of Bihar and Jharkhand by December 2023.
